What an annuity is
An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. You pay a premium, as a lump sum or over time, and the insurer agrees to make payments back to you, starting soon or at a later date, for a set period or for life.
Fixed, indexed, and variable annuities differ in how value is credited to the contract. Variable annuities are securities products and are outside the scope of this page.

People planning retirement income, people who want to set money aside with a defined payout schedule, and people who want to turn a sum of money into a stream of payments.
What it generally addresses
- Retirement income that continues for a set period or for life
- Deferring tax on growth until withdrawal, subject to tax rules
- Converting a lump sum into scheduled payments
- Passing remaining value to a named beneficiary, where the contract allows

- Annuities are long-term contracts. Withdrawals beyond the contract's allowance may carry surrender charges, and withdrawals before age 59 and a half may carry a federal tax penalty (Internal Revenue Code section 72(q)). Consult a tax professional about your situation.
- Payments depend on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Wolfepack Strategic Partners does not issue annuities.
